France is a major European hub for both large enterprises and growing businesses \u2013 coming behind only the USA, China, UK, and India for venture capital investment last year<\/a>. With that comes a need for the highest quality network connectivity available, not just locally, but that connects these companies to other major hubs across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our work in deploying a 400G-enabled route connecting Paris, Lyon and Marseille is making this a reality by providing businesses with an easier and more secure way to transport rapidly increasing high-bandwidth traffic to Milan, Zurich, and across the UK. Importantly, this project includes first-in-market network hardening of this critical route, leveraging next-generation fibre technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work of a Tier-1 connectivity provider is never done. With the new Amiti\u00e9 subsea cable, a 4,215-mile transatlantic submarine cable connecting Massachusetts, Le Porge in France, and Bude in the UK, built by our hyperscaler partners, we expect that bandwidth demand to facilitate connections with Marseille and Paris will continue to grow rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expansion Never Stops<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve recently announced the launch of a new wavelength route connecting Paris and Marseille via Bordeaux<\/a>, a key part of our broader strategy to invest in critical global markets \u2013 which Bordeaux certainly is given its central location in the South West region of France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the project, we selected Equinix\u2019s first data centre in Bordeaux (BX1) as a major hub on the route. Its presence highlights that the area is now a central internet hub in France, and more broadly, for Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When announcing Equinix\u2019s first Bordeaux data centre, its French MD, R\u00e9gis Castagn\u00e9, explained in Data Centre Dynamics<\/em><\/a> that it\u2019s part of the company\u2019s \u201congoing commitment to the French market, further supporting the growth of the local digital economy and digital transformation strategies. By locating in Bordeaux, we are hoping to make the new Aquitaine region a model for innovation, addressing technological issues and capturing the opportunities of digital business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French Evolution<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The region hasn\u2019t always been the connectivity hub it is today. For a long time, Marseille and Bordeaux have arguably been most valuable to France for their shipping trading history as strategically important locations at the crossroads between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While shipping ties are still vitally important to the French economy, it\u2019s the region\u2019s position as an Internet hub that\u2019s driving growth. Marseille currently enables access to 43 countries and 4.5bn reachable users and by 2025, the number of cables facilitating such connectivity is expected to increase to over 20, with a maximum capacity expected to increase from 160 Tbps to 640 Tbps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driving Economic Growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So why is this level of connectivity so important to the region? By no means is it just a nice to have \u2013 the data centre and cable-landing-station connectivity investment we\u2019ve delivered brings growth. It\u2019s all thanks to the natural cycle that starts once connectivity is increased. From there, the area becomes more attractive to businesses that rely on consistent connectivity to thrive. So more businesses move into the region, which in turn increases the required bandwidth, necessitating further connectivity investment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This, in turn, increases opportunities for people living in the area to enter the tech industry, considerably changing the employment demographic of the region. This is one of the reasons we\u2019re proud of our role in driving increased connectivity in France through our projects on the Paris – Lyon – Marseille route and now the Bordeaux route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Routes Growing in Importance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The increased connectivity doesn\u2019t just serve start-ups and scale-ups setting up in and around these seaside towns in Southern France. PeeringDB highlights that Marseille is home to content delivery networks for industry goliaths such as Google, Twitch, Microsoft Azure, and Amazon Web Services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you consider the sheer scope and scale of these businesses, you begin to appreciate the magnitude of the region\u2019s connectivity needs and how vitally important the routes which run through France are for consumers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Without them, the content these businesses deliver to households across the world simply wouldn\u2019t have the same reach or user experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connecting the World<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Marseille is already recognised as a top ten international Internet hub and with several new subsea cable projects set to deploy in the coming year, it\u2019s well on its way to breaking into the top five \u2013 alongside the likes of London, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est de notori\u00e9t\u00e9 publique que la France est un hub europ\u00e9en majeur. Tant pour les grandes entreprises que pour les industries en pleine expansion, se positionnant juste derri\u00e8re les \u00c9tats-Unis, la Chine, le Royaume-Uni et l’Inde en termes d’investissements en capital-risque l’an dernier<\/a>. Cela implique un besoin en bande passante important et une qualit\u00e9 de connectivit\u00e9 excellente, tant au niveau local qu\u2019au niveau international pour permettre aux entreprises de se connecter \u00e0 d’autres hubs majeurs \u00e0 travers le continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous sommes plus que fiers du r\u00f4le que nous avons dans ce projet. Notre route 400G qui relie Paris, Lyon et Marseille propose aux entreprises une solution plus facile et s\u00e9curis\u00e9e pour transporter des flux de bande passante importants vers des destinations telles que Milan, Francfort, Amsterdam, Zurich et \u00e0 travers le Royaume-Uni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avec la fin des travaux du nouveau c\u00e2ble sous-marin Amiti\u00e9, un c\u00e2ble transatlantique de plus de 6,700 kilom\u00e8tres reliant le Massachusetts, \u00e0 Le Porge (R\u00e9gion Sud Ouest) en France et \u00e0 Bude (Sud Ouest) au Royaume-Uni, construit par nos partenaires Hyperscalers, on s’attend \u00e0 ce que la demande en bande passante pour faciliter les connexions avec Marseille et Paris continue de cro\u00eetre de mani\u00e8re exponentielle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous avons annonc\u00e9 cet \u00e9t\u00e9 le lancement d’une nouvelle route en longueurs d’onde reliant Paris et Marseille via Bordeaux, un \u00e9l\u00e9ment cl\u00e9 de notre strat\u00e9gie d’expansion et d’investissement dans les principaux march\u00e9s mondiaux – ce que Bordeaux repr\u00e9sente ind\u00e9niablement avec sa position centrale dans la r\u00e9gion Sud-Ouest de la France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans le cadre de ce projet, nous avons choisi le premier op\u00e9rateur de datacenters, Equinix \u00e0 Bordeaux (BX1) comme hub majeur sur cette route, confirmant ainsi le positionnement de la r\u00e9gion en un n\u0153ud central d’Internet en France et plus largement en Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lors de son annonce, R\u00e9gis Castagn\u00e9, Directeur G\u00e9n\u00e9ral France d\u2019Equinix a expliqu\u00e9 dans Data Centre Dynamics<\/a> que cela faisait partie de leur \u00ab engagement continu envers le march\u00e9 fran\u00e7ais, soutenant davantage la croissance de l’\u00e9conomie num\u00e9rique locale et les strat\u00e9gies de transformation num\u00e9rique. En nous implantant \u00e0 Bordeaux, nous esp\u00e9rons faire de la nouvelle r\u00e9gion Aquitaine un mod\u00e8le d’innovation, abordant les probl\u00e9matiques technologiques et saisissant les opportunit\u00e9s du commerce num\u00e9rique<\/em>. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019\u00e9volution \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La r\u00e9gion n’a pas toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 le hub de connectivit\u00e9 qu’elle est aujourd’hui. En fait, pendant longtemps, Marseille et Bordeaux \u00e9taient des villes strat\u00e9giques pour la France en raison de leur histoire commerciale maritime – ce qui en a fait des emplacements essentiels de par leur position unique \u00e0 la crois\u00e9e des chemins entre l’Europe, l’Afrique et le Moyen-Orient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bien que les liens maritimes restent d’une importance vitale pour l’\u00e9conomie fran\u00e7aise, c’est la position de la r\u00e9gion en tant que \u201chub Internet\u201d qui stimule r\u00e9ellement la croissance. Marseille permet actuellement l’acc\u00e8s \u00e0 43 pays et \u00e0 4,5 milliards d’utilisateurs et d’ici 2025, le nombre de c\u00e2bles facilitant une telle connectivit\u00e9 devrait \u00eatre multipli\u00e9 par 20, avec une capacit\u00e9 maximale pr\u00e9vue en hausse de 160 Tbps \u00e0 640 Tbps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stimuler la croissance \u00e9conomique<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pourquoi ce niveau de connectivit\u00e9 est-il si important pour la r\u00e9gion ? Il ne s’agit pas seulement d’un avantage comp\u00e9titif consid\u00e9rable – l’investissement dans la connectivit\u00e9 des datacenters et des stations d’atterrissage de c\u00e2bles que nous avons r\u00e9alis\u00e9 participe d\u00e9finitivement \u00e0 la croissance de la r\u00e9gion. Plus il y a un besoin de connectivit\u00e9 et de bande passante, plus la r\u00e9gion est attractive pour les entreprises. Le d\u00e9veloppement de leurs activit\u00e9s passe par une capacit\u00e9 disponible, des datacenters innovants et des infrastructures robustes et s\u00e9curis\u00e9es. Cela permet \u00e9galement aux habitants de la r\u00e9gion de rejoindre des industries technologiques en plein essor, ce qui transforme consid\u00e9rablement le paysage d\u00e9mographique de l’emploi dans une r\u00e9gion. Ce sont pour ces raisons que nous sommes si fiers du r\u00f4le que nous avons jou\u00e9 pour booster l’augmentation de la connectivit\u00e9 en France gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 nos projets sur la route Paris – Lyon – Marseille et maintenant la route de Bordeaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PeeringDB souligne que Marseille abrite \u00e9galement des r\u00e9seaux de distribution de contenu pour des g\u00e9ants de l’industrie tels que Google, Twitch, Microsoft Azure et Amazon Web Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lorsque vous consid\u00e9rez l’ampleur et la port\u00e9e de ces entreprises, vous commencez r\u00e9ellement \u00e0 appr\u00e9cier l’importance de la connectivit\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaire pour la r\u00e9gion ainsi que l’importance vitale des routes passant par la France pour les consommateurs en Europe, au Moyen-Orient et en Afrique.
